Auto Insurance & registration?
I am a California resident, I drove my car to New York State for a five month job contract, I just find out my contract will be extend for another five months, I also just received my car registration wil due to renew in November 2006 and a Smog check certificate is required for this renewal.
Since I do not want to lose this contract, I plan to do the car Smog check in New York State, and send the renewal back to DMV in Califorina, but many friends told me that the requirements of Smog check in Calif. are differ from New York State.
Please HELP!!

Insurance for U.S car to drive in Canada?
I have just bought a home in Montreal as a second home to be nearer to family. My main home will still be New York.I plan to spend 5 months of the year there over the summer and want to know can I get auto insurance that allows me to drive my car there for that period of time?
The other alternative is to buy a car in the U.S and import it into Canada. If I have to do that does anyone know of any company that takes care of all the paperwork and handles everything on your behalf?
Thanks
Ok this is a question of residnecy for most states. You have your primary residence in New York and plan to continue on with that. So you do not qualify to have insurance in Canada as you are not a resident of Canada...(No having a second home there does not make you a resident). So you will have to purchase insurance throught the US and have a company that covers accidnets and liability in Canada. You also may need to be aware that Canada has a minum liability limit of 100/300 . I know the company I work for offers a certificate showing you have coverage on a certian vehicle for a certian length of time and it covers you in Canada. You just need to check with your insurance company.... Momma_Bear
Is it legal for me to drive right now?
THIS IS FOR NEW YORK STATE
I am 19, taking my road test in a few days. I have my PRE-LICENSING COURSE COMPLETIUON CERTIFICATE (For the 5 hour class) And my Leaners Permit.
I want to practice driving with my father in his car. He believes that there is some law that says people in my situation cannot drive legally in a car without passenger side brakes as well.
I also do not have auto insurance for myself (planning to get it after my road test)
Just in case I get into an accident/get pulled over while practicing , do you see any problems?
None whatsoever, there is no such requirement, and I assume your father's car is insured, which would cover your permissive use of his car with him being with you. The only real problem I see is his obvious lack of understanding the law.
ID's for illegals?
Last week the state of New York announced a plan that would provide a type of license to illegal immigrants. A Minnesota state senator also stated that he was in favor of providing worker ID cards to illegal immigrants. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has said that he opposes giving IDs to illegal immigrants, but there is no federal law that prevents it. New York Governor Eliot Spitzer says that the new IDs will bring undocumented immigrants into society and help lower auto insurance rates. What do you think?
Haha... I wasn't trying to be politically correct by using the term undocumented immigrant. In fact, it's an excerpt from an article I read. I strongly oppose this plan!
And if you read closely it says Eliot Spitzer referring to them as "undocumented immigrants"
What a joke!
I say we tag them like wild life and send them back to mexico, when they cross the border INS gets the notice and gets them and sends them back to mexico, preferably the end furthest away from America. Illegals are law breakers its that simple, they don't deserve sympathy. My favorite is "You split up families when you send illegals home, heres an idea... take your family with you...
